Assessment Without Pathology: Neurodiversity- Affirming Evaluation and Diagnosis

CE Hours 1

About this course

Psychological assessment is often experienced by neurodivergent individuals as one of the most invalidating encounters in mental health care. Traditional assessment models, while grounded in psychometrics and diagnostic criteria, frequently rely on deficit-based assumptions, biased norms, and interpretations that overlook context, identity, and environmental fit. This course examines how clinicians can conduct ethical, accurate, and clinically responsible assessments through a neurodiversity-affirming lens—without abandoning diagnostic integrity, evidence-based practice, or professional standards. Participants will explore how bias enters assessment at multiple points, including test selection, administration, interpretation, and report writing, particularly for autistic and otherwise neurodivergent clients across the lifespan. Through clinical discussion and case examples, this course provides concrete guidance for differentiating impairment from difference, integrating qualitative and contextual data, navigating diagnostic thresholds, and writing reports that are both affirming and defensible within medical, educational, and disability systems. Emphasis is placed on balancing diagnostic utility with ethical responsibility, minimizing harm while preserving access to services and supports. This course is appropriate for psychologists, mental health clinicians, and trainees involved in assessment, diagnosis, or interpretation of testing data.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least three ways bias may influence test selection, administration, and interpretation when assessing neurodivergent individuals.
  • Differentiate between impairment, neurodevelopmental difference, and environmental mismatch when interpreting assessment data.
  • Apply neurodiversity-affirming principles to diagnostic formulation and report writing while maintaining ethical and professional standards.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Jessica Scher Lisa, Psy.D.

Dr. Jessica Scher Lisa is a licensed psychologist and the founder of Long Island Mental Health and Wellness, a private practice dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care across the lifespan. She specializes in neurodiversity-affirming therapy and psychological assessment, with a clinical focus on autism, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and family systems. Dr. Lisa is particularly skilled in working with individuals who experience sensory sensitivities, social differences, and masking behaviors that often go overlooked in traditional clinical settings. In addition to her direct clinical work, Dr. Lisa is passionate about training other professionals to move beyond pathology-based models and adopt strengths-based, inclusive practices. She has provided supervision, workshops, and consultation for therapists seeking to better support neurodivergent clients in both individual and group therapy settings. Through her teaching and leadership, Dr. Lisa aims to help clinicians create therapy spaces where clients can feel safe, seen, and empowered to show up authentically.
